Is it me, or does it seem like Mitt Romney is fading from the headlines? He no longer excites the republican base, even though he's shifted all of his positions to the radical right wing of the party. Those tactics seem to be those of a desperate campaign, when in actuality he should be moving more towards the center in issues.
Some polls may state that the race is close, however, taking a closer look one would notice that in all of the key states the election is moving towards an Obama win. In states like Michigan, Wisconsin, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire Romney is trailing by more than 7.7% in each of those states. In states that are considered to be key to winning the election, Obama is also showing a lead of at least 4.1%. That includes Virginia, Florida, and Iowa.
Among Key voter groups Romney is leading by 2.1% for independents, 4.7% for men, and 13% for whites. The lead for Obama is quite larger for women (7.9%), Latinos (36%), African-Americans (80%), being a strong leader (8.9%), foreign policy (9.4%), and the middle class (8.2%).
Obama has a lead of at least 4% in the most recent CNN, American Research Group, Gallup, Rasmussen, and Rand polls. There is also a downward trend for Romney while Obama seems to be picking up steam in the polls. Such trends can be difficult to turn around once they get going.
The next big challenge for the Romney campaign will be to perform better than expectations in the upcoming debates against one of the most seasoned debaters of our time. Obama will be debating in a major debate for the 8th time, while Romney has not had a debate on such a large stage before. Given the numerous gaffes that Romney has had on the campaign trail, there is reason for concern in the republican camp.
Romney has seemed out of touch with many Americans, and has managed to offend many voters in key demographics. When asked about alternatives to health care access to Obama care, Mitt Romney said on a recent 60 Minutes interview that people without health insurance have the opportunity to get medical treatment in emergency rooms, which happens to be the most expensive way to receive medical care. If what's he's stated leading up to this point in the campaign is any indication of his performance on the debates, it's going to be an entertaining crash for the republican presidential hopeful.
