Painting a Story with Portrait Photography

By Karl Berch

Candid and spontaneous photographs taken in a session are occasionally the ones our clients love the most. We ask them to bring something personal that reflects who they may be at this time in there lives. For seniors it is most often some sports equipment a musical instrument. They also love bringing their pets. We've had everything form dogs and cats to snakes and horses. For younger children it's usually a favorite toy that is near and dear to them.

Having some private items available during a photograph session makes getting those candid's a straightforward process.

The best way to tell a little story about a senior that I've come up with is to get seniors truly concerned in the session. I'lI start by having them show me what they brought and then have them let me know why it's crucial to them. It's superb how swiftly they open up when they are talking about something that they love. When they're interacting with me this way, they're engaged and relaxed and some great candids and a fascinating story can be caught.

With the younger kids I really like to put them on the set with their favourite toys and just let them play and have some fun. I try to do little directing and if their the right age, I just talk to them about the toys and what their doing with them. After a few minutes they do not even know they are here to be photographed and a great story starts to appear.

Pictures are generally believed to be worth 1000 words. The most valuable thing that we all share on this earth is time. It's the only thing that we will give away and never get back. While we may only be on this earth for a limited time, our portraits will live on for ever. Pictures are freeze frames of moments of time you can only get back through an image. Just by picking up an old image you can suddenly emerge yourself into a sea of emotion. Is capturing a moment in your life truly worth it? I suspect the answer is quite plain.

Senior pictures are instant history lessons that provide you with a window to the past. Techniques of life can be explored in clear detail with a picture and your imaginativeness. We continually use photos that past cultures created to learn about what they were like. Have you got a documented history of your life for generations yet to come?

Photographs have a singular way of capturing minute details. Video is wonderful , but hails contrasted to the detail you get with an easy photograph. You can capture everything down to the feel of your skin in a picture. These minor details all help capture the basis of the image and moment of time portrayed.

Celebrities With Eating Disorders Aren`t The Only Ones With Disorders

By Mickey Jhonny

Late night talk show hosts and indeed a host of other satirists make them the object of continual jokes. Whatever you think of whether such jibes are in good taste or not, it's clear that many celebrities, particularly female celebrities, engage in dieting practices fueled by the very sort of driven personality which likewise enables them to achievement greatness in their craft.

It's common to blame the glitz of the lifestyle and the superficial and sexist attitudes of the general public who consume the mass media images. However, such glib and politically correct assessments too easily gloss over the fact that everything in the lives of successful actors, musicians and other media personalities is colored by the driven personalities that allow them to succeed.

It should hardly be surprising then that once they turn their attention to weight loss, they can get a little carried away. Christina Ricci, in her usual irreverent style, suggests this personality driven aspect of celebrity eating disorders with her remark to the Guardian newspaper in 2004 that hers began while watching trash television. "At the time that I was starting to diet and stuff, I saw this TV movie, and I thought, 'Ooh - anorexia. I could probably do that.'"

Other celebrities, for instance, Geri Halliwell of Ginger Spice fame, point out that the real cause of celebrity eating disorders can be found in the challenges of coping with life's usual ups and downs. It's debatable whether or not celebrity contributes to heightened daily stress. When you consider the occupations of many others that seems kind of improbable. But, even if you do believe it, whatever the pressures involved, they don't dictate the specifically chosen coping strategy.

The backlash against the innocent, ironic tweet of the ever entertaining Lady Gaga, from 2012, though is typical of the victimizing machine of the mass media and the self-appointed morals police. Young girls everywhere, it would seem, are in constant danger of the corrupting influence of social expectations. Even Lady Gaga, already on record as encouraging girls to develop a healthier sense of body image, couldn't acknowledge resisting a craving for a cheese burger without the self-appointed busy bodies raising hell. (Whether a cheese burger would actually constitute a healthy meal choice is of course another matter.)

If Lady Gaga, who had already bowed and scraped in front of the these morals police cannot joke about her own freely chosen adult dietary choices without being persecuted, what in the heck is really going on? Why does there seem to be such an effort to deny celebrities like Lady Gaga the freedom to take responsibility for their adult choices. Why must they be treated like victims? What is the agenda at work here? Could it be that the unremitting victimization of the celebrity has a residual benefit in making so much easier the victimization of their fans? Does this victimization though actually help the fans of celebrities with eating disorders?

The lesson from all this is certainly not to be misconstrued as implying that eating disorders are unique to celebrities. What is true, though, is that in the case of such celebrities, it is valid to regard those disorders as a product of the determination and strength that they already had to draw upon to achieve their professional success. This is not a denial of environmental pressures and stresses, in the end though, celebrity or otherwise, the bulimic or anorectic are making their choices.

And for those who think this assessment is unfair, who would dismiss it as a form of blaming the victim, perhaps you have the whole thing backwards. If the explanation for celebrities with eating disorders really was the mass media and the Hollywood glamour machine, there could be no other solution than to leave Hollywood or working in the media. Yet, there are plenty of success stories in which celebrities were victorious in combating their eating disorders, without needing to retire from their careers. They may have needed a break from the stress of work, but stress reduction is going to be an ingredient in any recovery plan. Rather, what this reveals is that just as the cause of the eating disorders lies in the celebrity, so too lay the solution. This shouldn't be offensive or threatening, it should be a note of encouragement. The news for all those who suffer eating disorders is one of hope: regardless of the difficulties in your own life, you have a secret weapon. That same strength and determination that holds you to the your current strict regime, the very engine of your eating disorder, is likewise there in you, the very same strength and determination, to draw from, when you decide you want to change your life.

If celebrity idolization is somehow mandatory, there are many different kinds of celebrities to idolize. You can choose. And better still, why not be the celebrity of your own life. It's your choice how to live your life; you've already proven the strength and determination of your personality. It's up to you how to use it. You don't need facile excuses about social pressures and mass media indoctrination. Take responsibility for your own life. Be the star of your own story.

One Of The Best Documentaries On Netflix Is A Long Story Of Closely Observed Human Life

By Mickey Jhonny

If you're a Netflix fan looking to hook up with a top notch documentary, I strongly urge you to give the 7 Up series a close look. Up front, we'll concede that it won't be everyone's cup of tea. However, failing to at least check it out may be depriving yourself of a truly remarkable documentary experience.

This series of films manages to be simultaneously a great achievement in documentary entertainment and a genuine contribution to sociological insight. It wasn't included on our list of the top 5 of the best documentaries on Netflix only because it really is in a different category.

If you're a fan of the gangster story, you can appreciate the difficulty in attempting to compare a great, one off, film like The Godfather or Goodfellas, with an equally great long arch TV serial like the Sopranos or Boardwalk Empire. There is a completely different experience involved. The long story arch reveals itself more slowly, with more detail and nuance. This is the nature of the difference between this series and your standard documentary.

It was 1964, the very threshold of what has come to be called the 60s, when British TV producers brought together 14 children from a diverse range of backgrounds for purposes of making a documentary on them. At least, it was the relevant diversity from the perspective of the producers, at the time: primarily diversity in gender, race and economic background.

The explicitly stated premise of the original program was to get a glimpse into Britain of the year 2000. The assumption was that the life conditions under which they began, would determine the direction of their lives into the future. The first installment ended with a promise to catch up with them again in the new millennium.

However, there was a young researcher on that original installment who was to go on to have an extremely successful career as a film director, working on a range of material stretching from the Gorillas in the Mist to 007. Michael Apted had a different idea about the potential of that project begun in 1964. Instead of waiting for the 21st century, he took his cameras back to catch up with the kids seven years later, when they where 14. And he's gone back every seven years ever since. The result has been one of the most extraordinary cinematic documents of all time.

As I write this, in the U.S., January 2013 ushered in the latest installment. The 7 year olds of 1964 are now 56. Perhaps you can imagine how strange this continually moving target of a story is. If you can stick with it, it provides an experience which is truly unique.

As you might imagine, not everyone considers it compelling television. Critiques complain that it's too slow and too mundane. It's not unfair to observe that these 14 people are not especially more fascinating than the people most of us know through friendship and acquaintance. So why bother watching a TV show when you could just watch your friends, as it were?

For the fans of the series, however, such criticism seems to be entirely missing the whole point. What is remarkable about this series is the transformation of the mundane into the sublime by turning the spotlight upon it. The heroism and humor, the small personal triumphs and tragedies of all our lives, are somehow dignified and ennobled as we watch these 14 people struggle through their own lives.

When you think about it, what we have here is the original reality TV show. The difference is that in contrast to the circuses going by that name, today, this reality touches something that is deeply, and at times heartbreakingly, real. Those who have become hooked on the series inevitably come to feel personal attachment with some of the kids-adults as their struggle through their own personal life challenges.

Yet, through it all, there is an irony underlying the entire enterprise. The idea that the series is capturing real lives; the original assumption that socio-economic origins would be charted through the years as determining life choices, all seems to have overlooked the observer principle.

The observer principle is often, and I might add mistakenly, attributed to the physicist Heisenberg. There's no need though of a confused idea about sub-atomic physics to recognize that knowing their being watched will have an effect on how people act.

Though it's less trendy as a pop reference, the appropriate comparison is to the Hawthorne experiments. These were a series of studies conducted by sociologists at a Western Electric plant in the 1920-30s. The point was to observe the behavior of the workers in the plant. It eventually became clear, though, that the very experience of being studied actually changed the behavior of the workers.

People who are being observed, and know that they are being observed, will tailor their behavior for the impression they want to make upon the observers. Such it would seem is human nature. We can never know, of course, how the lives of these 14 people might have been different, what other kinds of choices they might have made, what other directions their lives might have taken due to those different choices, if they weren't (and didn't expect to be) visited every 7 years by television crews. I can only say that intuitively it seems obvious to me that there would indeed have been different choices and maybe even life outcomes.

In some ways, even more that the genuinely moving story of the 14, coming of age, it is that conundrum which most intrigues me as I watch the series. It is a remarkable document that reveals almost as much about the hubris of the filmmakers as the lives of their subjects.

Check Their BBB Rating

By Doug Davis

With so many clubs and production companies booking live bands, how does a local band know who to work with and who to avoid? In reality, there are very few bad concert club or bad production companies, but they are out there.

There are several things you can do to make sure that you are working with good people. First always check to see what a clubs score is with the Better Business Bureau. A bad score doesn't always mean they are a bad business as the BBB is very tough on businesses. On the other hand, a good score almost always means that you're working with a quality company.

The BBB rates businesses on the number of complaints they get in a year and whether that business is capable of resolving such complaints. Think about the number of customers concert production companies deal with on a daily basis. Its is astronomical. For a small business they deal with a lot of customers from every walk of life. So its really hard for them to get a good rating.

Take for example Gorilla Music based out of Cleveland Ohio. They book about twenty shows a week that all have about ten bands per show. They have an A+ rating with that BBB and have only have three complaints (all resolved) in over seven years. That is an amazing feat. They also have great reviews all over the net. Search for Gorilla Music Review and you'll find a bunch of testimonials and other positive information on them.

One company that comes to mind that is doing well is Afton Entertainment. They're Better Business Bureau score is not great, but they do work with a lot bands and a lot clubs. These are good indicators of the quality of their work. Any production company that has a lot of good relationships must be doing something right.

Look to see which respectable clubs are working with them. Then, see what if they have a good score with the BBB. Ask them for referrals and see how many bands they have worked with in the past. If you hear something bad about a certain company always consider the source before you pass judgment. Remember the web is not always the best place to get referrals.

How To Find A Great Music Teacher

By Madeleine Bridgeman

When it comes to learning, the impact of a great teacher cannot be understated. Even if it we are taking a class with a subject we don't particularly like, a great teacher can make this subject interesting. Of course, the opposite also is true, and a bad teacher can make even our favorite subject seem dull. If your child will soon be taking music lessons, the instructor that you choose will have a huge impact on how quickly your child will learn and on how enjoyable the experience will be, so here are some ways to help you choose a great teacher.

You don't necessarily need a Juilliard graduate to teach your child, but it is wise to work with someone who has graduated from some type of music school. This ensures that they have a solid background. It is important not only to ask about their amount of experience but about the ages and stages of their students. After all, even though you might be impressed by a teacher that has taught for 25 years, if their students have all been older and more experienced than your child, it might not be a perfect match. Also, while teachers often instruct for a variety of instruments, they need to have solid experience in the instrument your child wants to play.

Whether you have dreams of your children performing front and center at Carnegie Hall or simply want them to learn about a musical instrument for fun, discuss these expectations with your future instructor. For some teachers, expectations are very high for each student and for others, they will have no problem if don't expect your child to make it to Juilliard before their 12th birthday. You need to have a conversation about your family's expectations and level of commitment to these lessons, as well as what the instructor expects from each student.

While practice is a huge part of learning an instrument and discipline is crucial, you should not forget about the fun factor. After all, you do want your children to enjoy themselves at their lessons. If the teacher seems very stern and inflexible, this might not be a great way to start for your child. Someone organized and thorough but personable is a better match for a young child who might be a bit nervous and even sometimes have a bit of trouble focusing.

In the end, take into consideration how you and your child truly feel about each teacher you interview. Sometimes the personalities just seem like a great match, even if it means that you are selecting a younger or less experienced teacher. Sometimes children are more likely to stick with an instrument if they get to choose the instrument and some of the songs they practice. Keep in mind, that even if they are playing rock music, they are learning just as they would by practicing one of Beethoven's sonatas.

If you are searching for music lessons in Dana Point, Laguna Niguel, San Clemente or San Juan Capistrano, a fun option would be to consider the Los Rios Rock School. Serving all of Orange County, this music school offers both private lessons as well as a special rock band experience for its students. You can learn virtually any instrument and also play that instrument in an actual band. The students perform a variety of concerts throughout the year at well-known Orange County venues such as Stillwater, the House of Blues and the Coach House.

Guidelines For Purchasing Body Jewelry Toronto

By Harriett Crosby

One of the ways of accentuating your beauty is by the use of jewelry. You can have various parts of your body pierced and then wear body jewelry Toronto. There are many people that sell these accessories and it is advisable to know what you should be on the lookout for when making a purchase. This will help you buy only the best accessories.

Avoid buying second hand accessories. This is because you can easily pick up an infection if the accessory has not been properly sterilized. After buying any new accessory, it is advisable to sterilize it first no matter where you bought it. Also, avoid sharing accessories with anyone, even members of your own family.

Choose a seller carefully. Preferably go for a seller who stocks high quality accessories, this may cost more but it will be worth it in the long run as the accessories will last longer. Big outlets will also give you a multitude of choices to choose from, in comparison to small retailers. You can also shop online and have the accessories shipped to you, no matter where in the world you are based. Check out the return policy of the seller and any buyer protection measures that have been outlined.

There are different sizes of accessories. You have to know what size will fit into the piercing you have. If the accessory you buy is too big then chances are that you will not be able to wear it. You can also buy accessories that are small or large in size if you are bold and want to stand out. You can enlarge the size of your piercing by buying an accessory that is slightly larger than what you normally use. Let your body heal first before trying to enlarge the hole again.

Handle your accessories with care all the time. This will help to prolong their duration. Only clean them using the recommended fluids and equipment. If you use something stronger or rough, you may end up damaging the accessory. You should take off your accessories when you are going to bed or when you are taking a shower or a swim. If you have accessories that vibrate or give off light, always check out the batteries to ensure that are fully charged.

Carefully choose what material to go for. If you react to most metals, try finding metals that are hypoallergenic as they rarely react with most people, even those who have sensitive skin. Also, opt for good quality metals as these will not react with your skin and they will last for a long time even after repeated use.

So as to know what the latest trends are, watching fashion TV or reading style magazines and websites may come in handy. You will be able to know what is in style and what is no longer fashionable. You can also ask for advice from the salesperson at the shop where you will make your purchase.

You do not only need to have one accessory, you can have multiple accessories. The advantage of this is that you will be able to wear the right accessory at different times and different places. Buying different body jewelry Toronto will help you have your personal collection to pick from depending on the type of occasion that you will be attending.
