Valuing Original Sculpture Art As Investments

By Michael Brown

When most people talk about investments, they would immediately think of stocks, bonds, or equities. However, most do not know that sculptures are also some form of alternative investment. Here are some things to know about original sculpture art as a form of alternative investment in this age.

Take note that while the art market is still pretty young, it is one of the markets that is growing rather rapidly. Sculptures specifically, have a demand that is almost as high as paintings in some countries. In fact, it is quite common to see galleries showcasing tons of sculptures for onlookers to scout.

Now, since the art market is rather unregulated, then a lot of feeling would have to be involved. What most art collectors would do is that they would try to feel sculptures and see which one appeals to them the most. The one that appeals to them the most would mean that these pieces have value.

Now, if one is interested in getting a sculpture that resonates with him or her, he or she has to value it. The best way to do that is through an appraisal as this will also verify the authenticity. Take note that copies also do have some value but their value will never be as high as authentic works.

When investing in sculptures, not only is the authenticity very important but also the demand. A lot of people go into the art market thinking that they can make money once the value of the art goes up. Not many take into consideration that although it has resale value, it has to have a market in which in can be sold.

The best way to determine the overall demand of sculptures would be to first determine how many times it has been sold in the past. Through that evaluation, one will be able to tell whether or not there is a good demand for the art or not. Usually, the galleries holding the sculpture would have the records along with the receipts that come with it.

For the new sculptures that have just been created and do not have records of sales yet, another good way to check the demand would be to see the other works of the artist. Check the most popular artworks that he or she has created and see how high the demand for the works are. In this sense, one will now judge the value of the sculptures based on the name of the artist and whether or not he or she has a title that can spark demand.

Always take note that investing in art is rather difficult because there are information out there not accessible to the public. With that, it may sometimes be difficult for one to determine whether or not a piece of work is actually a good one or not. That is why most collectors would just go with their feelings first to see if the sculpture resonates value to them and then proceed to the logical portion with the demand valuation.
