The Info Which You Need Concerning Government Transparency

By Margaret Ward

State secrecy was experienced some years back, but not today. Many countries have constitutions which call for an open government, which means they have the right to access any information about the different proceedings of the leaders. Government transparency allows the people to know what they are doing, and this is necessary to allow public oversight and openness.

All thanks to enlightenment, most people now have the strong voice and confidence to offer checks and balances to leadership they deem unfit. Different debates have been tabled to ensure the required and expected openness and transparency from the leaders is realized. Unlike before, when the people had no such right, today they have the luxury of keeping up with government-proceedings for the necessary oversight.

Democratic reforms also contributed to these changes where the people acquired a new voice. When there is democracy, and it is upheld by following the statutes, it means the country is democratic and people have a voice. This is how it started and ended up opening the doors of the governing body and personnel to access the details about their proceedings. Most societies have become democratic, and this makes them access all they need to know.

There are certain state-secrets which can be kept classified as long as the people need to access the information. There is a limit to what people can know. In any country, not all the people are patriotic and mean well for the country. As much as they can access another pool of information, they are prevented from accessing critical data that can jeopardize the security of people.

In the recent past, many countries have suffered acts of terrorism from the criminal gangs propagating havoc. When they access some vital details, they use them to execute their missions, which are meant to bring the leadership and different activities to a standstill. Lives and massive property are lost during such attacks, and to prevent them, the state also has the right to withhold some data and keep it classified.

The government has all the machinery to track down criminal activities and possibly prevent them from happening. They have come up with suitable agents who work undercover to unravel criminal puzzles and dens. When they get to the bottom levels of society where most of these activities are usually planned, they may seem ordinary people when in real sense, and they are agents of the investigating-government bodies.

Accountability is necessary for many leaders. When they expose what they do to the public, they may feel some need to be on the right track. They can have some fear of what people will do if they were corrupt. Keeping all their operations, secretive can only end up later as a big graft case whereby they were involved in some corrupt activities which cost countries a lot of money.

The members of the public have a right to be consulted with. This enables them to participate in ruling their country the right way. When proposing some changes and coming up with new ideas, the people ought to be notified as well and their participation and views respected. This leads to a happy country full of people who are satisfied and believe in their systems.
