Panama Flag And The Flag Company Inc

By Amanda Narrow

Explored by Columbus in 1502 and by Balboa in 1513, Panama was the principal shipping point to and from South and Central America in colonial days. In 1821, when Central America revolted against Spain, Panama joined Colombia, which had already declared its independence.

Panama gained independence from Colombia on Nov. 3, 1903, with encouragement and military support from the United States. The U.S. then acquired permission to build the Panama Canal and paid $10 million U.S. and an annual fee of $250 000 per year. The Panama Canal, the land it is built on and the area surrounding it is leased to the U.S. and comes under direct United States control.

The Panamanian flag was designed by Mr. Manuel Amador Jr. and made by his wife Ms. Maria Ossa de Amador. The flag of Panama is sectioned into four quarters. The top left and bottom right quarters are white. The top right section is red and the bottom left is blue. In the top left white section there is a blue, five-point star and in the bottom right white section, there is a red, five-point star.

It is indeed exciting to discover that there is a woman named Maria Ossa de Amador who finished the 3 flags before the independence day of Panama from Columbia. The tale behind this flag as it was made secretly on November 1, 1903, was safely kept from the Columbian government.

The blue represents the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea and red stands for the blood shed for Panama's independence. The blue star represents the civic virtues of purity and honesty and the red star symbolizes the authority of the law. Together they represent loyalty and resilience.

There is a barrage of cheap and inferior Panama flags being imported and sold, that do not comply with the flag statute. This is bad for a number of reasons. Imported flags are cheaply made and more importantly, the designs, materials, colors, and methods of printing do not compare well with the better quality, longer-lasting, and correctly designed flags. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Panamanian flag for the future.
