WWE- The Beginning

By Wanda Rosner

There are lot of wrestling fans that you can find in and around the world but there are very few of them who actually know how it started. The beginning marks way back in 1925 when Roderick McMahon began promoting boxing matches in the city of New York. He came to acknowledge Joseph Mondt, who was a professional wrestler and was making effort to take sports to another level. He made out new moves, found wrestlers that wanted to join him and started making wrestling a more viewable sport.

According to recent statistics the WWE Corporation is the largest wrestling promotion in the world, which holds more than three hundred events in a year. It has more around 40 million fans around the world and is viewed in almost 150 countries. It has its headquarters at Connecticut and its offices in many major countries around the world.

Just as in other professional wrestling promotions, the shows performed by the wrestlers of WWE are not legitimate but merely for entertainment. It has storyline, it is scripted and the matches held are choreographed, it includes moves and stunts that can be harmful for the wrestlers if not performed properly.

The WWE first came into existence in 1989 by its founder Vince McMahon just to avoid the taxes that were charged by the athletic commissions. It promoted their product as a sports entertainment, which provided information about the use of the products in competitive sports and dramatic theatre.

Both McMahon and Mondt want him to defend his title, but being the title holder Roger had to choices either to defend the title or to pay 25,000. In which roger chose to defend the title and ultimately lost the battle. This made McMahon and Mondt upset and they decide to leave NWA. This made the creation of the new wrestling corporation, World Wide Wrestling Federation or WWWF.

On 2002, the WWF (World Wrestling Entertainment) revealed that it was changing its company name and also the name by which it is branded as, WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment). It had to face many disputes due to this such as the music used, the change in funds raised etc. But the company's main motive to change the name was to bring the viewer's focus on entertainment. It later announced that it will not use the full name and only call itself as "WWE". It reflected WWE's entertainment expansion outside the ring and spreading the goal of contacting entertainment companies and getting into television, holding live events and also producing films.

Later WWE decided to start two branches of it, namely the RAW and the SmackDown. There were lot of talented wrestlers that couldn't find their place in the WWE ring, therefore providing them another platform was necessary. Raw and Smackdown followed the same protocols for entertainment. They continued to divide and create separate shows such as the ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling). They also launched combined shows of Raw and SmackDown under the tag Raw Supershow.

McMahon was later found to hire Hulk Hogan and many other wrestlers and started selling the WWF television shows to several stations and on VHS outside the north-eastern territory. WWF got a great response from the viewers and it made a lot of publicity, but they also caught up in the conflicts with the NWA and other wrestling promoters. It began happening especially when McMahon started taking wrestlers from different groups. Despite of all the chaos it was McMahon's efforts that created the WWF which is today known as WWE or the World Wrestling Entertainment. It changed the way people enjoyed sports and made huge success in entertainment world.
