The Proper Way On How To Hold A Violin Correctly

By Iva Cannon

When choosing an instrument for the first time being aware of the important factors in the handling of the instrument that need to be executed is always a must. Learning the proper way on how to hold a violin correctly will ensure that beautiful music will be made. The physical demands and mental awareness are very important factors when choosing this particular instrument.

Once posture has been established, shoulder rests and hand mechanics should be examined. The instrument should rest on the collarbone and be supported by the musicians left hand. To stabilize the violin the musician should use gentle weight from the head while applying the chin to the chin rest. This is the first step in learning how to hold a violin properly.

The shoulder pads and chin rests are very important to the position and the function for the violin. One component that the shoulder pad provides is giving the musician some friction so the violin stays in its proper place. The shoulder pads also help with the physical demand on the body when playing. The shoulder rest can be as simple as a non-slippery cloth or a more innovative type such as chamois skin. The type of pad used would be up to the musicians preference.

To improve the overall function of the instrument and to provide more comfort for the player the positioning of the shoulder pads is another important factor to be addressed. The shoulder pad helps to keep the instrument in its proper place by adding friction. This way the musician does not have to worry about the violin slipping while it is being played. Musicians have two types of shoulder pads to choose from. The first form is a basic cloth that has a non-slip coating and the other type is chamois skin.

Positioning of the chin rests are also a very important factor when playing this instrument. The chin rest helps to protect the varnish on the instrument as well as providing the player with extra comfort. As with the shoulder pads, there are two styles of chin rests. The most popular type of chin rest is the basic, flat rest. The other type is a more contoured type. If the player is not sure which they would prefer they can try out both styles.

Now that it is positioned correctly, strings almost parallel to the floor with shoulders and hands in place, the musician can begin to play. Most students find it helpful to practice the positioning by just simply walking around with the instrument before beginning to play.

When holding this particular instrument, the strings should be parallel to the floor, making sure the shoulders and hands are in the proper position. To assure that the musician is fully prepared to play some students of this art prefer to walk around just holding the violin, adjusting the positioning as needed.

As with any type of music this requires research and practice to become a master of this art. Once established though the end results will be well worth all of the time and effort.

It can easily be held for quite a long time if held correctly. Students of this art just need to follow a few simple rules and beautiful music is but a mere thought away.
