Handmade Hats For Newborns For Gifts Or Photo Ops

By Kerri Stout

Shopping for babies is always fun, especially when it's for something special rather than necessities like diapers. There are great specialty boutiques, and all departments sores have baby clothes. But the internet is a resource that's hard to match for variety and choice. Handmade hats for newborns are something that stores necessarily stock in limited supply, but online it seems like the selection goes on forever.

Of course, you may not be planning to buy one at all. If you are the kind of doting aunt, thrilled grandmother, or expectant mother who knits or crochets, you may plan to make any gift or article of clothing needed to outfit a child. If you do have the skill and desire to make your own, you'll be glad to know that there are so many patterns available that it will be hard to make a choice there. Too.

It's fun to virtual window shop, especially if you're planning on taking pictures for a baby album or a birth announcement. Seeing the designs that are available will give you great ideas on how to best present the new arrival to friends and family. There are even sets for twins and designs for kids who've grown a bit while you're getting your photographic gear together.

Animals are a favorite theme, since babies look adorable with ears and whiskers. Bears, monkeys, bunnies, lions, and even giraffes are featured. Dinosaurs grace hats and diaper covers, in case you want to have both head and tail. Since these are popular all over the world, there are variations of all these animals and more to choose from.

Babies who basically don't even have their eyes open yet look adorable in sailor caps, fireman's helmets, and hard hats, all done in softest wool or synthetic yarn. Little girls can have flowers of every hue or a lacy, jeweled turban fit for a ranee. Little boys decked out as tiny fans of sports teams or modeling sports attire that may forecast things to come will be hits with everyone.

As gifts, these little bonnets are useful as well as fun. Not all are practical, though; some are merely whimsical and are more for photo ops than for wearing on an outing. There are stocking caps with long tops - maybe longer than the baby - and tassels on the end. There are lacy caps for christenings and sparkly ones to celebrate a new princess or prince.

In many communities, knitting groups or crochet clubs make caps for newborns they will never meet, donating them to organizations that give layettes to expectant parents who need a little help getting ready for Baby. Especially for an unwed mother or a couple with no close relatives at hand, such a thoughtful, handmade gift may mean a lot - and perhaps be the only celebration of their new child's birth.

For a shower or Birth Day gift, a special occasion or photo shoot, a project that will bless others, or just so you can dress your little one up as a lop-eared bunny rabbit, go online to see what's available or to get ideas. You'll find designs for both girls and boys, sets for twins, and adorable pumpkin hats for late October babies.
