Some Popular Christian Arguments Against Evolution

By Ina Hunt

Charles Darwin certainly sparked one of the most controversial debates of all times when he published his epic work titled On the Origin of the Species. His theory that live forms evolve slowly over time has been rejected by most religious groups and creationists. They maintain that the earth and all life forms have been specifically created. There are numerous Christian arguments against evolution, even though scientists have largely accepted the theories of Darwin.

The Bible is the main source of information for religious groups that argue that there can be no such thing as creatures evolving slowly over time. They see the Bible as accurate in every sense. The Bible clearly states that God created the earth and the heavens Himself in six days. This is enough for staunch believers. They say that the Bible does not contain any lies.

Another popular defense by believers is that the very existence of the universe is clear proof that there is a Creator. They say that even scientists agree that the universe is not eternal and that it had a definite beginning. This, they say, is clear proof that there must be another force that is eternal and that created the universe at a specific time and place.

The Second Law of Thermodynamics is also often used by believers and creationists. In terms of this universally accepted law things tend to become less ordered as time goes on. Decay takes place on both minute and grand scales. Stars burn out, matter deteriorates and structures crumble eventually. This is in direct opposition to the theories of Darwin that says that things and beings tend to become much more ordered over time.

Fossil records feature strongly in the points made by creationists. They say that all fossils found to date are fully formed. Not a single fossil that shows a transformation into another state has ever been found. They also point out that the slow evolving process proposed by Darwin would be impossible and that creatures in that state would not be able to survive at all.

The matters of language and consciousness are also often used in arguments against the theories of Darwin. No life form other than humans is believed to have free choice, to be able to communicate at a sophisticated level and to express itself creatively. Creationists point out that no attempt to teach intelligent animals such as chimpanzees to talk. The human ability to express emotions, to remember experiences and to exercise free will cannot be explained by neurological evolving.

One of the strongest arguments used by religious groups is the fact that the theories of Darwin suggest that evolution is aimed at the survival of the fittest. This is not true, say critics, because so many life forms on earth depend upon one another. Many species will not be able to survive if the species that they depend upon does not also thrive.

It seems that there is little chance that the debate between evolutionists and Christians will be concluded to the satisfaction of everybody. Creationists believe that the Bible is irrefutable prove that God created earth as it is. They say that no species can possibly evolve into something else, not even over a long period of time.
