The Importance Of Screenwriter Tools In Film

By Mark Phillips

As most writers know, one of the most difficult areas to break into is that of film and television. While this is the case, there are some screenwriter tools and software applications which can help writers of all levels. In fact, there are some which can take individuals from the beginning of a project to completion.

While there are several options when it comes to these applications and tools, Celtx seems to be a favorite of many screenwriters. For, the software makes it easier for writers to kick start a project. In most cases, this software works well from creation all the way to completion, including editing and shooting schedules.

The first step in the Celtx package is known as Concept to Complete, which involves writing, breaking down and creating a storyboard, scheduling and budgeting productions. One way in which this is possible is by using a shared file in which all writers, editors and production crew members can work on, and communicate about a project at the same time.

While this may sound like a challenge, the easy to use software makes learning simple, is easy to use & designed to facilitate real-time collaboration. In large part, it is this real time collaboration that can save movie makers a great deal of time and money. For, in the past a hard copy script had to be delivered and reviewed by editors and producers whom may or may not have been available at the time.

One other feature anyone working on a script might like is having the ability to work from anywhere in the world. As such, if shooting a documentary for a final project on location, it is easy to stay in touch with professors. For, the ability to ask questions and discuss ideas, revisions and thoughts on a daily basis is a great plus, especially for those undergoing the learning process.

The steps with regards to creating content and moving toward completion are often the same among software applications and tools. First, writers begin by telling a story using industry standards regardless of the type of writing project. Some different types of writing projects include web series, commercials, videos, promos, shorts and feature films.

In the storyboard phase, writers most often use this time to communicate the message with regards to the vision for a project. In addition, many also use this time to block shots and mark location shots for cameras, set up lighting and place cast in positions along with setting up designs. Whereas, the time remaining is often used to obtain props, wardrobes, equipment, confirm set locations and notify crew when ready to begin shooting.

Lastly, by creating a list of proposed shots, planning the shot type, setting up the angle and movement of cameras, and assuring all cast is in wardrobe and ready for the shoot. After which, scheduling shooting dates, setting up locations and keeping cost within budgetary guidelines are often the last tasks before the start of production.
