Pulp Painting Artwork: An Introduction

By George Johnson

Regular painting requires prior preparation. Pulp painting is no different. Careful preparation of the pulp is significantly important. It has the potential of determining the end result of the painting.

It is a type of art that uses the pulp to create a colored painting. The pulp is applied on a safe carefully to create a colorful painting. There are different materials that can be used to create pulp such as reeds, grass, bamboo and even cotton fiber.

The choice of the plant fiber is an important step. The fiber is then mixed with water and beaten or blended until the fibers are well mixed to produce a fine mixture. The technique used to mix can produce different texture with one type of fiber.

Bamboo is the most preferred pulp ingredient. It is usually available in most areas, absorbs well and is very easy to control. Once you mix the fiber well, you will then need to color it.

Each pulp tends to absorb color differently. The fibers tend to behave just the same way textiles do. One red pigment when used to color different fibers, it will appear differently. This all depends on the texture of the pulp and how well it was mixed.

One needs to be very keen when mixing the colors. You can get different tones or end up losing the desired color if the coloring is not done properly. Be sure to avoid putting different colored pulps together as the colors can get mixed up.

The technique used in these paintings allows the addition of colors. The colors are mixed optically to give a certain illusion. When you stand and view the painting close, you are able to see the different fibers and their colors separately. But when you view the painting from a distance, it gives a mixed perception.

It is important to have a sketch of the painting you want to create even before you get started. The painting technique used may be confusing if you do not have a sketch to guide you. This is mainly because unlike in other artworks where you start with the background moving forward, this one requires you to start with the front and move backward.

This kind of artwork requires special experience. Unlike regular painting where one starts with painting the background, this one requires you start with the front and work towards painting the background.

You start with painting the foreground and move towards painting the background. The idea behind this is to avoid messing the different layers of pulp you will have created earlier. This allows you to have some control over the outcome of the final painting result.

The pulp should remain wet during the painting period. You will need to carefully apply the different layers of pulp when trying to achieve depth in the painting. You can also use different color tones to achieve this.

Once you are done with the painting, you can strengthen the background with a layer of pulp and a board. Silicon is the best adhesive to use. You can also quicken the drying process by using a vacuum pump to suck most of the water from the piece.

The entire piece depending on the size can take up to weeks to dry. Once it is dry you can remove it from the board and have a paper thin painting as your end result.
