This is a form of art whereby intricate designs are made by filling compartments with metal, soldering them and passing them through fire. This technique was traditionally used in Japan to adorn small objects like jewelry, samurai sword enclosures, water droppers, and architectural elements. This decoration technique was introduced to Japan by the Chinese people. The artists of Japan became vigilant, and within no time, they became experts. The art has also gained popularity in Europe and America.

Since this art was only used to decorate small architectural objects, it was not used as an income generating art. However, around 1833, a former Samurai called Kaji Tsunekich from Nagoya, Omwari Province, thought of ways to generate revenue. He was thus forced to find additional income to supplement his little salary. This official thus obtained a piece of the art, took it apart and examined how it was made. He later produced a small enamel dish using this art.

Samurai Kaji lived in Nagoya which was located in Omwari province. He was so hardworking, and within a few years, he became an expert. He began teaching people from his area and, people appointed him the official warlord in the whole province. This marked the beginning of Japans success in exportation.

This made Nagoya and the surrounding areas to become famous due to their innovative techniques. These artisans could make beautiful objects that people could never have imagined possible. Later, many centers started designing ornamental items, which were awe-inspiring in many regions. With time, almost every province in Japan became manufacturers of the beautiful cloisonne items.

From humble beginnings in Nagoya in the early 1830s, the art grew and became very popular. This art of cloisonne enameling expanded dramatically during the late 19th century. It thus became one of the most successful forms of manufacture as well as export in Japan. It was a great booster of the economy of Japan.

The people of Japan wanted to preserve the culture and educate their children and other people about their origin. They thus opened several museums to showcase the different works of art.
