Why Surreal Comedies Are Popular With Audiences

By Brenda Snyder

Absurd events are happening all the time, and people need only tune in to see them. Film directors and the companies they work with have earned the cachet for creating movies that have surrealist and realistic elements in them. Many movies are made this way, often making money and done by the most exciting directors.

Not only is surrealism a good and novel element in films, it has been a movement in art, novels and theater. There used to be such a good demand for specifically surreal comedies unlike what we have today, because audiences nowadays are accustomed to the surreal. This means that it is an already accepted element that does not turn off audiences.

It was also related to the Dadaist movement, which combined the most unusual things into surprising, even shocking scenes. But surrealism belongs to dreams, the subconscious part of the mind. Artists know how scenes like these are relatable in strange ways, and will often have connections to everyday living and scenes.

There have been times that these comedies made waves on many kinds of art scenes. For Hollywood movies, the concern is whether it can be a successful one while being commercially viable at the same time. Directors like Martin Scorsese every once in a while come up with movies like THESE and make them a hit.

Today the people watching features do not have to know the precise surreal elements that are present. One reason is because this has become such a casual element for people, disbelief is suspended easily and has become common practice. The audiences here know that the surrealism is already a given as storylines are improved by tech, even the obviously surreal films will not be labeled like that.

In technical terms, most everything is possible in movies now, and the people involved really put this to good use. Their advantage is that many of the techniques used were developed precisely for movies. And while tech does not make surrealist elements, the story or plot or them will create them as the feature goes.

The artists or poets all use it at one time or another, and a lot has been developed for screen and stage. The plays may be those using surrealism in the practical everyday sense, rooted in the realities of this world. This is a very good thing that has distinguished comedies, too, and it shows in critical acclaim.

The production of movies like these should not be reliant on technology. But it is not exclusive to the use of any special effects that may apply. The more advanced or better quality movies can be told straight up, with just the basic technical equipment for features, and the surrealism will be better pronounced or played up according to how a director wants it to work.

The list of features that have surrealistic humor central to them is long. But reviews may vary, because a lot of these are B features, while there are only a fraction known mainstream. This is a relevant range, since there will be times that a director needs to use both extremes to make a good plot even better and have more impact.
