Missouri's recorded history begins in the latter half of the 17th cent. when the French explorers Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet descended the Mississippi River, followed by Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, who claimed the whole area drained by the Mississippi River for France, calling the territory Louisiana.
Missouri's state flag consists of three horizontal stripes of red on the top, white in the center and blue on the bottom. A circle is centered on the flag while being surrounded by a band of blue with 24 white five-pointed stars. Contained within the circle, the Missouri coat of arms appears which was designed by Judge Robert William Wells. The center of the seal is composed of a three-part shield held by a grizzly bear on each side. On the right is the United States coat of arms which features a bald eagle whose claws clutch handfuls of arrows and an olive branch.
On the left side stands a grizzly bear and a crescent moon. The motto, âUnited We Stand, Divided We Fall,â surrounds the three parts within the circle. The coat-of-arms also features a yellow scroll at the bottom which reads, âSalus Populi Suprema Lex Esto.â Thatâs Latin for, âLet the welfare of the people be the supreme law.â Below the scroll is the Roman Numerals for 1820, the year Missouri became a member of the United States. Above the shield is a knightâs helmet which has 23 smaller stars and one larger star to represent Missouri.
The three horizontal stripes on the flag represent bravery, purity and justice respectively. The colors on the flag indicate a French heritage as Missouri was part of the Louisiana Purchase from France. The 24 stars surrounding the coat of arms represent Missouriâs induction as the 24th state.
The 3 primary colors, which are red, white and blue, being the national colors, stand for the virtues of heroism, purity, justice and vigilance. The bears represent mighty strength and power. The shield is divided into 2 halves. The right portion depicts the United States coat of arms. This is to signify the authority and control of the US over the state. The left half bears 2 images; a crescent moon, which is a symbol for the new state and the second one is a grizzly bear representing bravery. The motto "United We Stand, Divide We Fall" forms a part of the emblem. The bears are shown on a ribbon that reads the state motto "Let The Welfare Of The People Be The Supreme Law". Right below it, the Roman numerals MDCCCXX or 1820 indicates the year when Missouri became a formal state of the Union.
In 1988, to celebrate the Missouri State Flag's 75th birthday, the Missouri elementary school children helped to raise funds to have the flag restored. It is now on display in the Missouri State Archives in Jefferson City in the James C. Kirkpatrick State Information Center. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Missouri flag for the future.
