Non-partisan political information is a very valuable commodity. It is valuable because it is not very abundant in the political discussions that usually go on. Many organizations do present themselves as being a solid source of this type of information and the vast majority of them do have a definite side they present from. Sadly, the dominant media are also included in this group.
This type of information should be presented in an unbiased way. The particular leanings of most political websites present from their own preferences, whether Conservative or Liberal. They wish to be in charge of the discussion so their particular opinions are grasped and accepted. This is based on the contention between the two major political parties that the other side must, therefore, lose that discussion.
There are many sites that Conservatives appreciate. These are Conservative by nature and do not even suggest they are non partisan. They have as their goal to inform, educate and equip those looking at the political scene in the ideas, ideals and principles of Conservatism, hardly a balanced endeavor. These sites will be the DrudgeReport, The National Review Online and the Weekly Standard. There are others, of course.
Purely Liberal efforts are not non partisan, either. Some out of a long list will be The Daily Kos, Liberal Oasis and MoveOn.org. The Liberal content on these pages does not lend itself to be anything other that what it is and that is Liberal in every way. This is the only point in which the two sides agree, and that is that content, promoted by them, can not be non partisan and, at the same time, effective.
There are quite a few sites and groups that promise to present truly non partisan political information. A few of them are Project VoteSmart, PoliticalBase, FactCheck and SpotOn. Most of these garner a vast amount of their support from Liberal contributors, such as the Annenberg School through their Public Policy Center. These are left of center groups and the sites list, as staff members, political activists that have already made their positions known. These records can be evaluated to know the preferences they will be recommending.
A fairly straight forward presentation of candidates and initiatives to be voted on is offered on the Project VoteSmart website. The recommendations for the specific candidates and what should be voted on is, however, always leaning toward the Liberal mind set. Sometimes, one could point out, the information given and the recommendations offered do not match.
It has often been said that everyone is entitled to their own opinion but not their own facts. Facts are, indeed, non partisan. A case in point would be the issue of gun control. Stating that over 200 million guns are in circulation in the United States and that makes for a dangerous population is one thing. Not stating that the horrendous mass killings that make the newspapers are occurring in the States and communities that have the harshest gun control laws brings the discussion to a different point. That point is based on facts.
Non-partisan political information is in short supply. It is out there and can be seen by adopting a careful approach to what you are reading and viewing. One sided discussions should be viewed as what they are and that is partisan. Any hate or vitriol presented is done to cover up the presenter's inability to defend their own position and should be ignored. Non partisan means facts, so look for those.
