The Role Of Music In Achieving Academic Success

By Anne English

For non music aficionados, it would be easy to disregard the value of music in how a child faces academic life. In schools or learning centers, music is considered a non-core or simply a minor subject compared to the sciences, mathematics and the language arts. But, it cannot be discounted that it's able to help rouse the minds and bodies of students.

The fact that music education positively affects a child's intellectual ability in math and in other subjects has already been proven in various researches. It helps to develop analytical thinking that is needed to learn and comprehend mathematical problems. As an example, a student taking up piano lessons actually does better than a student who isn't into music education at all.

Generally, children with music background tend to have higher scores in school than those who don't attend music lessons. This is the reason why most schools nowadays integrate music education programs as part of their academic curriculum. This paves the way for students to further enhance their abilities across all subject areas. They usually have an easy time in taking tests and in doing their school work and assignments.

Kids who possess the ability to read musical notes as well as play an instrument, especially at an early age, perform well in other areas of their school life. But aside from being excellent in the academics, they also manifest enhanced self-confidence. Not everybody gets the opportunity to learn how to play a musical instrument. Therefore, a child who has the gift of creating beautiful music with, say, a violin shall grow up believing that he or she can do much more later on in life.

Another benefit that it gives is in the development and improvement of the child's coordination and other motor skills. Learning the right way to perform rhythms is just one of the many benefits of music education. This allows the child to physically and mentally move more quickly but in a more precise manner. And on top of all these, he learns the significance of discipline and applies it to his daily life so that he could be successful in whatever endeavor he chooses.
