Getting a tattoo is a big decision, if you don't like the design you chose after it has been done then your only options are expensive and painful removal procedures or trying to cover it up somehow. If you find a really good artist then they can try to cover over a bad tattoo, but that is a complex process so really it is better to choose carefully and get it right first time.
Below are 3 tips to help you avoid some common tattoo mistakes that people make:
Make sure you know who will be doing the work: At the start of the page we discussed choosing the right tattoo, but it is also crucial that you pick the right person to do the work on you as well. In most countries then there isn't any sort of regulation so anybody of any skill can start a tattoo business, this means the skill level between artists can vary a significant amount.
That is why my ritual now when I want a new tattoo is to buy some magazines on them and have a look through at the artists they talk about in there. The interviews they do and awards they give allow you to highlight which artists are skillful and passionate and which are just out to make some fast money, then you can choose from there. Ok you are probably going to have to travel to actually get some time with one of those artists, but when the result lasts a lifetime then isn't it worth a bit of extra effort?
Please check and double check any words: Unfortunately misspelled words are one of the most common and embarrassing mistakes that I see happening. The most common cause of this has to be that someone decides they want a phrase inked on themselves and then they just ask the tattoo artist for it with no planning. A much better and safer option is to actually type out what you want on the computer and print it, then you can spell check it to make sure everything is ok and the artist can't misread your handwriting, then double check the spelling after they have written it out on the template too.
Think ahead: This is something that I am guilty of unfortunately, don't let your excitement for getting your first tattoos stop you from thinking about what you might want in the future. It is important that you leave room to expand your design if it is in a popular place like on your arm or back, and how easy is the design you chose to add to later or blend in with other tattoos? Most people who get one end up getting at least a few more tattoos, and trust me it looks odd to just have a collection of single tattoos, the best designs are those that have a lot going on in them and cover a larger areas.
