Why People Turn To Oil Based Paintings

By Paul Hamilton

There is always a debate between oils and other mediums between artists. There are advantages and disadvantages to these. After oil paints, the next common medium is acrylic. A lot of people enjoy these, especially abstract painters as well as beginners. Oil based paintings have been presented in the works of many famous artists from the beginning of times.

Many people think that this is a snob thing and that you are not a proper artist until you have experimented with oils. However, everyone who does have the chance to experiment with all forms of paints and mediums will find that there is something special within the oils. Of course, there are negatives like everything as well.

It can take up to a day or more for the paint to dry, depending on how much you spread on the canvas. It means that you can do a little work, and take a break and then go and do some more work later on. You can even continue the following day. You can't do the same with acrylics. This is the reason why many people move across to oils.

You have to be sure of what you are doing with most other mediums because it is not easy to take it away if you feel you should have gone in another direction. The amazing thing with oil paintings is that you can take away what you don't want anymore. Mineral turpentine will help you with this. The paint will easily come off the canvas, depending on how long it has been on there for.

By applying a lot of paint, this will create some texture. Artists often use a lot of tools. It especially relates to abstract painters who will use different palette knives. They will use sponges and bottles where they can splash on the paint. They will also create layers and you can see some of the color underneath. This also creates interesting undertones.

Different type of oil come in a number of forms. These have been developed over the years since the days of Matisse and Picasso. For example, you cans use pastels which are oil based. Some people will mix these with the paints to create two different textures and a couple of different tones. Many people also say that they prefer Acrylic because they are bold and rich. This will apply mostly to the contemporary artists.

There is, of course a lot that one can do to make the oils stand out, but the acrylics are less realistic. The glaze is also popular with oils and it can be mixed with a pigment which helps it become more professional in the way it looks. It becomes rich and glossy, and it can change the painting overall for the better.

Many artists just enjoy painting in this way because it is more traditional. All the great artists used oils, mostly because that is all that there was. However, these days, there is so much else available. Even with so much else that one can choose from, oil always tend to be really popular.
