By Donna King

More people are getting in the kitchen to make new culinary creations. It may sound fancy but due to the recent surge in cooking TV shows, magazines and other media, trying out new recipes has become a pastime people will not put down. Sometimes, when people cook they want to add humor by covering their refrigerator with funny stickers, wearing novelty aprons, or utilizing tools that look funny but save time.

The reasons for the fascination with food vary. Some people just like to see what they can create and share with others. Others would rather eat in familiar surroundings, or just save money. People looking to cut costs will find that buying dried goods or using coupons will save a lot of money over time.

Health is another good reason to learn how to cook. People often feel better when they have a home cooked meal that is not loaded with excess oil and sodium. In addition to eating fresh vegetables and lean meats, those who eat healthy on a regular basis will find it easier to maintain a normal weight. They are also less likely to suffer from chronic illnesses like high blood pressure or elevated cholesterol.

What many may not know is that some restaurants use a lot of fat to make simple meals. A home recipe may call for butter or vegetable oil but restaurant may use generous amounts of both. This is especially true with deep fried items, like french fries. There are many recipes that call for a teaspoon of oil, followed by cooking in an oven.

Food enthusiasts, or foodies, that like to try new things or see how to spin classic recipes. Often people like this enjoy cooking and sometimes do not mind creating meals from scratch. This type of person is always on the lookout for a new kitchen tool or accessory that will help them create more. They also appreciate gadgets that reduce the cooking time.

Anyone can buy aprons and chef hats in a number of colors and cool patterns. Some people like things with a cute quote or an image of food. Others like compartments, or pockets, to place tools not being used. Either way, these are a good idea for protecting clothes and hair.

Anyone who is learning their way around the kitchen may find that it helps to have some timesavers on hand. While aprons protect clothing, food storage bags help extend the life of fantastic dishes. Some people prefer to have regular food and food freezer bags at their disposal. The advantages over storage containers is these take up less space when not in use and can be formed to fit in small spaces.

People that are intimidated by the kitchen may find it easier to start with sides or finger foods. Besides being small in portion, there is not a lot of seasoning or measuring. Once a person feels more confident, they can move on to more complex recipes and practice time management in the kitchen. Often people who seldom cook find this is their main obstacle to preparing great meals. They tend to rush and find themselves overlooking an important step.
