The Various Aspects Of Fantasy And Adventure Novels For Young Adults

By Melanie Duncan

Both fantasy and adventure stories are commonly regarded as two different, but highly popular literary genres. For the most part, they are written with the motive to create large scale fiction and epic storytelling. For many years now, young readers have continued to absorb these novels and they are now known as some of the best-loved stories in the world.

Fantasies are novels that circulate around the theme of magic, incorporating supernaturalism into many of their stories. At the same time, they draw the reader into an imaginary world inspired by mythology. It can be said that many stories are based on medieval times, though you will often find the use of wizards, sorcerers and witchcraft.

A lot of the time, these novels will be compared with science-fiction novels, and a number of similarities are visible. The main difference lies in the fact that one is largely based on science and the other is lacking in scientific logic. It may also be put in comparison with the theme of horror, though does not touch macabre themes. All three can be placed under the title of speculative fiction.

On the other hand, adventure novels' main purpose is to supply the reader with enhanced levels of excitement by filling the book's world with risk, exploration and an elevated level of danger. This will draw the reader into the story effectively. Though fantasies use the imagination to fuel the story, stories that deal with adventures rely on the reader's increase in adrenaline and sense of risk.

Both genres talked about place the central protagonists in a world that differs greatly from the reader's reality, often appealing to the teen reader. Either the world of magic and supernaturalism, or the world of heightened experience. This way, the reader is pulled into a world outside his level of understanding.

Both fantasy and adventure books have been produced for many decades. They both function to take readers out of his world and into a new one. Saying this, they are both different and should be checked out before you settle with a favourite.
