Most people know the concept of symbolism. Images are rarely literal, especially if they are in dreams. However the type of image and how they are interpreted help people make sense of the world. This is especially the case of Jungian or Jung symbols and the fact they transcend cultures.

The idea of the collective conscious is that there are certain concepts that appear to be universal and transcend boundaries and cultures. For example pretty much all cultures around the world have some form of story about the origin of the world as well as prophecies about how the world will end. In a lot of these stories there tend to be familiar images such as floods.

In this theory it is believed that these symbols were often a part of our collective understanding and that on a certain subconscious level we all recognise them. Often we recognise these particular subconscious images regardless of whether we are aware of this or not. It was on this basis that Jung developed a lot of his theories.

A classic example is the trickster. In fairy tales, folk legends and modern movies we see numerous variations on this archetypal character. In some cases the trickster might be a good character such as Brer Rabbit. In other cases this character is evil such as the fox that corrupts Pinnochio. However such is the nature of the trickster that in the story the character may be more ambiguous such as Willy Wonka. While he may turn out to be good in the end there is a certain mischief and malevolence that he seems to revel in.

A lot of these recurring symbols help people to make sense of the world. One reason that fairy and folk tales are handed down through the ages is because they teach children right and wrong, helping them to be aware of the potential danger around them without putting them under any real threat.

One big crucial difference between how the Jungian psychologists interpreted symbols and how Freudians interpreted them is the idea of the shadow. While Freud saw this purely in terms of sexuality the Jungian interpretation is arguably more complex. There is the idea that in effect our so called darker sides are merely a part of a whole and are not necessarily good or bad. Jung essentially argued that men have a female side and women have a male side as well and there could be good or bad in both.

Another aspect of this is the anima or animus. The anima represents the male perspective on women as well as any female tendencies in a man. With the animus this is reversed and is about what a woman expects from a man as well as any male characteristics that they may have. Often these expectations are what shape how we interpret the characters in stories or the images in our dreams and this will affect how we gain meaning from the world around us, whether we are aware of it or not.

In short the archetypes and symbols that Jung describe are an effective way to help people interpret themselves and the world around them. Our mentors help guide us, we learn to avoid tricksters and we come to accept both the light and dark in our personalities. Most societies are based on survival of the fittest and this is when human ruthlessness comes into play. When people feel trapped in crappy situations they will often find ways that break social rules and policies. With more people fighting for the same resources come the conflict and violence that seems endless. Naturally, this is not to assume that utopia can simply be formed.

Life is said to be about balance and maintaining this balance sometimes requires strong and hard measures to be taken. Controlling the way the world population is growing is important because most of the resources available seem unable to sustain every single individual. Therefore it seems only logical that people need to take more control in the way that they start out their family structures. There is no lack in education as the global village willingly provides information.

All a person has to do is look into the congestion that is high in cities. People are living in condition which can sometimes be considered inhumane due to the need to fight for their peace of the same resource. Without making changes the world will soon find it hard to cope under the weight of human populations.

Classic TV Sitcoms Are Entertaining

During the 1970's ABC television in America decided to copy a popular British show called "Man About The House." The new program fit well into the classic tv sitcoms category. They hired three unknown actors and named their new show "Three's Company." This series lasted for eight full years until the network decided to cancel it. For years people enjoyed watching Jack, Janet and Chrissy get into all types of chaotic situations. Once the show was canceled they made a new show called "Three's A Crowd." It failed to attract viewers from the previous comedy.

"I Love Lucy" is a unique program which featured a crazy woman with bright red hair. The show starred a husband and wife team along with their usual sidekicks. Lucille Ball was the queen of comedy during her time and she knew how to get into very zany situations.

The production company was also owned by Desi and his wife and they decided to change female characters in television. No other woman had ever done physical comedy before Lucille and each episode featured this unique ability. The character of Ethel Mertz was always there to assist Lucy.

America was going through drastic changes when "I Dream Of Jeannie" was created. Women had become more independent during the 60's and this show represented their boldness. Jeannie was a magical woman who was living with her stern master Major Nelson. His best friend and sidekick was Major Roger Healey. The show proved to be very popular until Major Nelson married Jeannie. At this point in time the series had really jumped the shark.

Another show which featured a magical woman was "Bewitched." The star of this event was Elizabeth Montgomery and she played on this cursed show until the bitter end. Many actors who starred within this series have all passed away and the first casualty was Alicia Pearce. She portrayed the first Gladys Kravitz and died after the second season. The show also had two men who played the role of Darrin Stevens. Dick York quit this series and was replaced by Dick Sargent.

"Good Times" was a series about a struggling black family living in the Chicago ghetto. This series was a spin-off of a show called "Maude" and it proved to be a big hit. Unfortunately the ratings went downhill after the third season when John Amos quit. Many people felt that he was the glue which held this series together and they stopped watching after his departure.

Anyone who loves animals will certainly watch a series called "Mr. Ed." Ed was one talking horse who could create all kinds of problems for his master. In one episode this animal pressured his owner into buying him glasses. Later on it was discovered that the crew smeared peanut butter onto Ed's lips to obtain animated action.

Anyone living on this planet has heard about the very famous "Gilligan's Island." The show was only on for three years but it has a cult following.
